The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was founded as Kumasi College of Technology after a Government Ordinance from 6th October 1951. The College was opened on 22nd January 1952. On the 22nd August 1961 was granted the college the status of a university and renamed as Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Today (2014) is the KNUST with ca. 42,000 students the second greatest university in Ghana. The main campus in Kumasi is located around of:
